Perry Burns draws much of his inspiration
in painting from travels throughout Nepal, Thailand, Mexico, and Morocco.
Throughout his work organic and graphic patterns vie for attention. As Burns
explains it, "I think of painting as a sort of organic architecture where pattern
carves out space and creates a sense of place. In many of the eastern countries
I've traveled to, pattern is thought of as a visual representation of peoples'
spiritual lives, a visual mantra. In my painting, pattern not only serves a
spiritual purpose, but a structual one as well. Like time signatures in music,
visual patterns have qualities of time, repetition, movement and space, so I try to
exploit those qualities to the most dynamic effect."
